As the cultivation of brassica crops continues to contribute to western diets, new approaches to maximizing yields are welcome. This book presents chapters on various aspects of this issue, with a particular focus on canola crops and the oil produced from them. Those chapters address the relevance of transgenic and molecular breeding techniques to develop cold tolerance in . Canola seed (oilseed rape). Oilseed rape comprised two species of Brassica, i.e. field mustard sarson, turnip rape, or Polish rape B. campestris and Argentine or Swede rape B. napus. This chapter describes the flowering, pollination requirements, and pollinators (including honey bees, carpenter bees (Xylocopa spp.) and bumble bees) of oilseed rape.
Oilseed rape production in the EU has not been so low since the EU the EU expanded to 27 Member States. Oilseed rape, a major crop in many parts of the world, is attacked by a wide range of insect pests, many of which are of considerable economic importance. With the increasing demand to reduce agrochemical inputs on arable crops, the Commission of the European Communities supported a three-year programme in which scientific participants reviewed the natural enemies of oilseed rape insect pests.
